Charles ‘DJ Charlie Hustle’ Johnson is a multifaceted creative force whose journey weaves through the realms of academia, art, music, fashion, activism, and a deep-rooted passion for history. Growing up over the oldest bar in Milwaukee, Charlie discovered an early passion for cultural history. This interest was nurtured further during his time at Fordham University where he engaged in archival work with the Bronx African American History Project. This experience not only deepened his understanding of Bronx history but also fueled his commitment to preserving and sharing cultural heritage. After graduating from Fordham, Charlie continued his pursuits in music and community organizing, becoming an integral part of the Rebel Diaz Arts Collective (RDACBX) and later The Bronx Boys Rocking Crew (TBBTBG Global). As a Hip Hop DJ and beat-maker, he helped showcase the vibrancy of Bronx b-boys and b-girls and rap artists like Kemba at community events and on national and international tours. In the face of the pandemic and the crushing grief of the passing of his sister Martha, Charlie saw an opportunity to explore a new passion—thrifting and reselling sustainable fashion. The South Bronx Swap Meet, born from this endeavor, became a testament to his commitment to sustainability and entrepreneurship. Charlie resides in Mott Haven with his partner, Karla, and their two-year-old son, Charlie Jr. Their home is a hub of creativity and a celebration of sustainable living.
